The Ave Podcast – The Official R&B Fantasy Draft

The Ave Podcast with Cal Cee. The Official R&B Fantasy Draft

Today on The Ave Podcast, we are launching a special podcast series, introducing the “Official R&B Fantasy Draft”. The Draft is based on a Snake-style format of the greatest R&B singers over the last 42 years, whether it be a soloist or from a group (careers must have started in 1980 with the exception of two artists – I’ll let you guess who). Over the course of the next six Fridays (including an “Honorable Mention” episode), each round will be released as we select these legendary artists into our own Supergroup, consisting of four artists & one producer/production team. You can select anyone from Whitney to Alicia Keys to Normani, It is up to you.

Starting today, this post will be updated as we will be releasing each Round of the podcast series. You can also go directly to the South Shore Ave YouTube Channel to watch each episode. As always, you will be able to listen to the series on ALL MAJOR PODCAST PLATFORMS (Click on the links below). Listen &/or watch, and also subscribe!

As a bonus for you Spotify listeners, the participants and I will be curating The R&B Fantasy Draft Playlist #SouthShoreAve as we share some of our favorite songs that our selection of singers and producers have ever created. This will also be updated every week starting from today, and every Saturday morning thereafter.

* The participants of this series are as follows: Cal Cee (Myself/Host); Singer/Entertainer Shalli; DJ Chris Nice (Grooves & Rhythms Mixshow, Fridays 4-6pm on MyLime Radio); Wukup Productions (Wuk Hours, Thurs 2-5pm & Island Fusion Fridays, Fridays 6-8pm on MyLime Radio); & DJ/Producer DJ Keo

The Ave Podcast – 20th Anniversary of Stillmatic

The Ave Podcast with Cal Cee. Episode 181: 20th Anniversary of Stillmatic

On the latest edition of The Ave Podcast, we break down one of the greatest albums of the 21st Century (for the culture). On Dec. 18, 2001, in the midst of the middle of one of the biggest Hip Hop beefs ever, you know when they say, the Rose that grew from the concrete? Well, through the back & forth beef with Jay-Z, as well as beefing with Rocafella Records (Jay-Z’s record label), and the critics turning on him, Nas ended up creating the acclaimed Stillmatic, his 4th studio album. The album re-solidified Nas’ name as one of the true Kings of the genre, going on to sell over two million records based off the success. Among other accolades, it also achieved one of the highest honours bestowed on an Hip Hop artist’s work: It achieved the mythical 5 Mics status in The Source Magazine. I’m joined by Justis from Beats By Bruises, DJ/Producer DJ Keo, and SSA Family Member Shawn Adonis, as we discuss how important this album was for Nas’ career; Takeover vs. Ether and what it meant for Hip Hop; share our Top 3 songs from the album; and much more.

The Ave Podcast – Fugees’ The Score @ 25

The Ave Podcast with Cal Cee. Episode 146: Fugees’ The Score @ 25

Today on The Ave Podcast, we’re calling on the spirits of Flashback Friday as we discuss one of the great albums in music history. Twenty-Five years tomorrow, The Fugees (comprised of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras) released their second album on Ruffhouse/Columbia Records “The Score”. The album was released during the height of one of the most tumultuous periods in Hip Hop yesterday, but The Score went on to not only outsell every album in it’s genre, the impact was felt way beyond North America. With the group’s stunning mastery of their own style (which was Hip Hop-R&B-Caribbean influenced at minimum), the album went on to sell over 6 million copies in the USA alone, and over 20 million worldwide. However, the group members went their separate ways (almost chaotically) & never made another follow up album to their legendary masterpiece. I’m joined by DJ Chris Nice & DJ Keo as we discuss the legendary album; inquire if Lauryn was actually the greatest talent in the last 30 years; the Fugees downfall & if successful groups are designed to last; the power of Ego; plus we share our Top 3 songs; the importance of “Killing Me Softly” for the group, and how it forever changed their careers, and so much more.

#TheStoop: Black On Both Sides #20Years

Today on #TheStoop: A Mini-Podcast series, we take you back to the musical Golden Era of 90’s music, and celebrate one of the Greatest albums of the decade. Twenty years ago tomorrow (October 12, 1999), Mos Def (now Yaasin Bey) launched his debut album, Black On Both Sides. Fresh off the success of the Black Starr collaboration album with Talib Kweli one year earlier, Mos dropped a critically acclaimed and underrated masterpiece, where he discussed his socially conscious views for the masses. This album achieved Gold status in the process. I invite actor Dennis Barham and producer Justis from Beats By Bruises as we break down our Top 4 songs off the album, his career, & a lot more.

#TheStoop: 30 Years of Doin’ The Right Thing…

Today on the Season 3 premiere of #TheStoop: A Mini-Podcast Summer Series, in the spirit of Flashback Friday, we take you back to one of the greatest movies ever made. Thirty years ago last week, Spike Lee launched his 3rd cinematic movie “Do The Right Thing”, a movie that perfectly captured the racial tensions of one hot summer day in Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy to be exact). I invite DJ/Producer DJ Keo, ESPN’s 30 for 30 Podcast producer Andrew Mambo, and SSA Family Member Kevin W as we discuss how this movie affected our generation, how it relates to the culture the last 5 years, how this movie & Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” elevated each other, if Radio Raheem is actually underrated, plus a lot more.

The Ave Podcast – 25th Anniversary of Above The Rim

The Ave Podcast with Cal Cee. Episode 69: 25th Anniversary of Above The Rim

In the spirit of #FlashbackFriday, we take it all the way back to March 1994* where we celebrate and pay tribute, to one of the more impactful movies in pop-black culture. Twenty five years ago, New Line Cinemas & director Jeff Pollack released Above The Rim, a movie about a New York City HS Basketball star and his relationship with two people: one is a drug dealer, and the other one is a former basketball star fighting his own personal demons. Both of these men impact his life at a critical period in his life on his pursuit of playing NCAA basketball.

So today on The Ave Podcast, I invite Dennis Barham (Actor) & 1st time guest Peter-John Kerr (Director/Producer; Founder of Swooplay), as we have a conversation 25 years later about Above The Rim. We discuss the influence this movie had on basketball players from our generation, Tupac’s impact and his untapped potential as an actor, question the existence of Tommy Shepherd, review the legendary soundtrack, and much more.

* Technically, this movie debuted on March 23, 1994. However, the decision was made to air this podcast a week later so that it didn’t get lost during the 1st weekend of March Madness. You’re welcome basketball fans….

The Ave Podcast – The Greatest Two Weeks In Hip Hop. Ever.

The Ave Podcast with Cal Cee. Episode 57: The Greatest Two Weeks In Hip Hop. Ever.

Today on The Ave Podcast, we take you back down memory lane to discuss the greatest two week stretch in Hip Hop history. On Nov. 9, 1993, two iconic albums were released on the same day, A Tribe Called Quest’s 3rd album Midnight Marauders, and Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. Both albums went on help usher in a new era, and became two of the most influential bodies of work in the genre. If that wasn’t enough, exactly two weeks later Snoop Doggy Dogg released his debut album Doggystyle, which followed the same path as the two albums before it, and launched Snoop into superstardom.

I invite DJ Chris Nice (Grooves & Rhythms Mixshow, Fridays from 2 – 4PM on MyLime Radio) & Dennis Barham (Actor) as we discuss these three albums, the peak of Hip Hop’s Golden Era, how the ’93-’94 stretch may have represented the best 2-year period that ever existed in the genre, plus a ton more. Please enjoy.
